Located within an Estate in Pretoria, the project sought to revitalise an existing recreational space into an inviting destination for residents of all ages. The vision was to create more than just a playground — a shared environment where children can explore, play and interact, while parents and families can relax, connect and spend meaningful time together.
Through thoughtfully designed recreational spaces, landscaped gardens and social gathering areas, the park aims to encourage outdoor activity, strengthen community connections and bring new life to an underutilised space within the estate.
The challenge was to accommodate a dedicated action soccer field within the limited existing park footprint, while creating a variety of recreational and social spaces catering to different age groups.
A key consideration was protecting park users from the adjacent main road without compromising the park's openness and accessibility. This presented an opportunity to introduce a subtle boundary that provides safety while maintaining a visual connection to the surrounding estate.
The design needed to balance energetic play with quieter spaces for relaxation and social interaction, creating an inclusive environment where children, teenagers and parents can enjoy the park together.
The success of the design lies in its thoughtful spatial arrangement, accommodating all the required recreational and social spaces within the existing park footprint. A series of interconnected areas creates a natural balance between active play and moments of pause, allowing different age groups to enjoy the park simultaneously. The result is a vibrant hub of activity that remains safe, welcoming and accessible — a place where children can freely explore, play and linger, while parents relax and connect. More than a recreational space, the revitalised estate park creates a shared destination that strengthens the sense of community.
